Where is the backslash on a Japanese keyboard?

I regularly battle my office computer's Japanese keyboard.  Try writing an email when the apostrophe is Shift+7, rather than just next to your pinky (it:s annoying).  Or try typing with a shortened space bar, where the new key just to the left of the space bar switches the keyboard into Japanese letters... おぱす.

Yesterday I was stumped with a new challenge.  I needed to type a backslash (\) in order to remotely log in to another computer.  I looked and I looked, but I could not find a backslash.  There's a forward slash (/) near the bottom right, but no backslash that I could find.  Does anyone see one?

At any rate, in order to log into this computer, I first had to Google "backslash", go to the wikipedia page, copy the backslash, and paste it into my log in screen.  Sheesh.

Small adventures.

  1. Since you're on a Mac, I can give you something a little less Internet dependent.

Go into System Preferences->Keyboard. Select "Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in menu bar" (last check box). Alternately, go into Language & Text->Input Sources tab and select "Keyboard & Character Viewer" which is the top option in the list of languages on the left (it's got a little line under it to differentiate it).

Now when you click on the Input switcher in the top menu (I assume you have one to switch between English and Japanese characters, mine either looks like a US flag or DV for Dvorak), you can make it show the Character Viewer or an onscreen Keyboard. You can even search for characters if you know the unicode name (backslash seems to be reverse solidus, but there are many backslashes to pick from). You can add things to a favorites list so they're easier to find later.

  2. Ha, I've had these same struggles, except much less complicated. On a German keyboard, the "y" and the "z" are switched, there are extra spots for "ä," "ö," "ü," and "ß," and a bunch of other symbol keys are switched around. I just noticed, though, that there is also no noticeable backslash key and also no tilde (which I use so much, for some reason). I've been using an international keyboard, however, which just has symbols moved around (for example, tilde is next to the shift key). Luckily, on a Mac, many symbols (particularly the German ones) are really easy, like "ä" is just alt+u, then a.

  3. I remember when I was standing at the lobby computer in 2006 (JKASP) trying to type an e-mail, and hitting the change to Japanese button all the time... I used my own laptop in Japan, but I guess with modeling, you don't have that option.

  4. Yen mark (one key left from [Delete]) is backslash. The code for backslash is assigned to local currency mark in international standard. US ASCII doesn't pay respect to that standard and use that code for backslash, as US currency mark ($) has its own code in international standard.

    2. didn't work for me! My keyboard even has the backslash symbol on it but the key doesn't do anything. Maybe if I download Japanese keyboard language...
